A leather piece of furniture is more than its cover. Beneath the surface are a frame, foam, webbing and a construction that all contribute to comfort. Successful restoration therefore aims to recover the balance of the furniture, not simply hide signs of wear.
First distinguish cover wear from wear to the furniture itself
Dry leather, scratches, a polished armrest, an open seam or a weakened seat: each symptom calls for a different response. A marked surface can sometimes be repaired and recoloured. A torn or overly fragile area may require a panel to be replaced. If comfort has disappeared, the work may also need to include the foam or suspension.
Repair, replace or rework part of the upholstery
- Repair keeps as much of the original material as possible when its structure is still sound.
- Replacing a panel treats a damaged area without requiring a complete restoration.
- Partial or complete reupholstery can restore a more even seat, tension and silhouette.
