A marine cushion is more than its cover
A new cover can improve a cushion’s appearance, but it does not always correct compressed foam, distorted shape or poor moisture drainage. Restoration should consider the whole element and its location on board.
Measure the cushion in its real position
Dimensions should be taken at the base, corners and contact areas with the bench. A photo of the cushion in place helps explain clearances, curves and how it fits into the boat.
Inspect the foam and fasteners
- compressed, damp or distorted foam;
- a fastener that is difficult to use or exposed to water;
- an open seam, loose panel or cover that is too tight;
- a underside that does not allow enough ventilation.
Choose a cover that suits storage
How cushions are stored, dried and cleaned affects material and construction. A set used outside throughout the season needs a different approach from protected cabin cushions.
Prepare several pieces as a group
When several cushions are restored, photograph and label them before dismantling. This helps preserve positions, orientations and any differences between the individual parts.
